Waste-free future with BACESS
Bornholm is undergoing a significant transformation in its waste management. BOFA, the island’s leading waste management company, has announced an ambitious goal to make Bornholm waste-free by 2032.
The vision is not just a distant dream but an active goal that requires collaboration, technology, and innovation. A crucial step towards this goal is the partnership between BOFA and BACESS, which has developed recirculation technology, turning waste into valuable biofertilizer.
In 2018, BOFA initiated the “Zero Waste Bornholm” project with the aim of gathering knowledge and technology to realize the island’s goal of waste-free living and eliminating incineration as the primary solution.
David Christensen, project manager for Zero Waste Bornholm, emphasizes the importance of partnerships and the development of sustainable technology to achieve this vision. BOFA and BACESS’ partnership, extending to 2032, focuses on the development of technological solutions that align with Bornholm’s sustainability ambitions.
Bornholm – leading in the fight against waste
One of the most exciting partnerships under Zero Waste Bornholm is with BACESS, utilizing recirculation technology where the goal is to utilize bio-waste in a far more valuable way than simply burning it for energy.
The technology sanitizes biomass, including food waste, at precise temperatures and can result in climate-friendly biofertilizer in just 48 hours. The partnership between BOFA and BACESS was born out of a shared dream of a sustainable future and a joint effort to achieve it.
BACESS’ recirculation technology has the potential to revolutionize waste management, not only in Bornholm but worldwide. By implementing the technology, recycling the nutrients in our food waste alone could replace approximately 40% of Denmark’s artificial fertilizer needs, significantly reducing the import of artificial fertilizer to Bornholm.
